CYBERSECURITY / BUILDER / COMMUNITY

Make things
safer.
Make things
that matter.

I'm Drew, a security architect, builder, and community organizer. I help people navigate complex technology, turn ideas into useful tools, and create opportunities for others.

THE THREAD THROUGH IT ALL

Technical depth.
A human perspective.

For more than 20 years, I've worked where security, software, and people meet. My background spans financial services, federal banking, healthcare, and consulting.

I've built authentication platforms, led enterprise security teams, advised executives, and helped developers make security part of everyday delivery. Across those roles, the work has been about turning complicated problems into practical decisions.

That same hands-on approach carries into my life outside work: writing useful code, exploring digital art, sharing what I've learned, and bringing people together around community projects.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

From the systems underneath
to the decisions that shape them.

Security architecture, identity, program leadership, and the teams that make it work.

01 / ARCHITECTURE & IDENTITY

Build security into the foundation.

My roots are in application engineering and enterprise identity. I've designed and operated authentication, single sign-on, and access management platforms, with experience across federation, privileged access, and secure application architecture.

That foundation informs my work on AWS and Azure migrations, threat modeling, and security design across both legacy and modern systems.

02 / ENGINEERING & DELIVERY

Make secure delivery practical.

I've built a Security Champions program from the ground up, bringing more than a dozen embedded development leads together to connect engineering and information security.

By integrating vulnerability management into Agile delivery, I've helped teams remediate thousands of findings and achieve near-zero findings on cloud application releases. My consulting work also included creating a Security With Speed methodology for incorporating security into Agile development.

03 / LEADERSHIP & RISK

Connect technical risk to real decisions.

As a security director and virtual CISO, I've built programs, developed teams, set policies, managed incident response, and communicated risk to executives and boards.

My experience includes vendor assessments, regulatory compliance, and security governance across financial services and healthcare, as well as contributing to policy for secure AI and large language model adoption.

HOW THE EXPERIENCE CONNECTS

A career built from the ground up.

Engineering experience gives me a practical starting point. Leadership experience helps me connect that work to the needs of an organization.

  1. Engineering & invention

Built web security and authentication systems and developed a patented reporting application that replaced a multi-day manual process with near real-time analytics.

  2. Operations & enterprise leadership

Led identity operations and information security teams, strengthened authentication reliability, and built security architecture, policies, and incident response capabilities.

  3. Consulting & program development

Created a security line of business, delivered virtual CISO services, and helped organizations improve cloud security and development practices.

  4. Security architecture & influence

Lead application security and developer engagement, contribute to enterprise security direction, and help teams evaluate emerging technology responsibly.

Technical grounding. Continued learning.

My certifications and training span CISSP, Certified Ethical Hacker, AWS Cloud Practitioner, AWS Security Specialty, Azure Fundamentals, and Security+. My work has involved NIST, FedRAMP, FFIEC, GLBA, SOX, HIPAA, and PCI requirements.

SECURITY IN FIVE

Complex topics.
Five minutes at a time.

From June 2017 to June 2022, I created and hosted Security In Five, publishing more than 1,400 episodes and growing the audience to 25,000 monthly listeners.

The goal was to make complex security topics useful to a broad professional audience. The podcast has concluded, but that commitment to sharing knowledge continues through my projects and the Security In Five GitHub account.

COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTIONS

More people.
More opportunities
to play.

Founder and Director,
P.L.A.Y. Miracle League

From an idea to a place to belong.

In 2022, I began an initiative to bring Miracle League baseball to Prior Lake, Minnesota, creating a safe, structured place for children and adults with disabilities to take part in the game.

I worked with city officials on approval for a field in a city park, assembled a volunteer team, and organized a grassroots $500,000 fundraising initiative without tax dollars. The new field opened in fall 2025.

For me, this is another form of building: bringing people, planning, and sustained effort together to make an idea real.

A longer commitment to youth sports.

Before and alongside the Miracle League initiative, I served as Director of Travel Baseball from 2020 to 2023, managing a program of more than 25 teams and 300 players. Those experiences connect organizational leadership with the everyday work of supporting a community.

THE PERSONAL SIDE

Curiosity doesn't stop
at the end of the workday.

Outside my professional work, I make room for coding projects, digital art, and creative experiments. Some become practical utilities. Others become a new image for a phone screen.

My public projects explore image conversion, photo slideshows, audio tools, and everyday automation. They reflect a hands-on way of learning: try an idea, solve a problem, and share something others can use.

The wallpaper collection is the visual side of that curiosity, a place for color, atmosphere, and a little variety in something we look at every day.
